This past October, six members of the Novi Chapter went on a
Whitetail hunt to western Ontario with Lake of the Woods Outfitters
which is owned and operated by Don Sauve of Kenora, Ontario. The hunting
party included Don McNabb, James Ruddock, Terry Filas, Bob Taylor,
Dan Taylor and Terry Broemer. Kenora is located just north of
international Falls, Minnesota so we elected to drive. The trip went off
without a hitch with the exception of a three hour border crossing.

All transportation to and from the camp and
during our stay at the camp was by Boat. There was water every where.
Don Sauve's camp is known for taking large whitetail deer. The camp is
very nice with two trophy whitetail on the wall and a wolfthat was taken
close to the camp. Hunting was slow during the week that we were there.
A combination of warm weather and very high winds had the deer hunkering
down. There was very little movement during the week that we were there
and we ruined Don's record of every hunter having an opportunity at a
buck.
Although the hunting was somewhat slow, the camaraderie of the group
and the amenities of the camp made for a wonderful week. The camp has
showers, hot and cold running water and Malcom. Malcom was the camp cook
and how he could cook. We thought he was more akin to a chef. Every night
when we came in there were hors d'oeuvres waiting for us. His best dishes
were Venison and freshly caught pike from Lake of the Woods. But his most
outstanding creations were the deserts such as: apple pie, chocolate
mousse pie, a cheese cake and a black forest cake, all made from scratch.

Even with the poor conditions we were able to
harvest two nice bucks. Dan Taylor took an 8 point on the second day and
Terry Broemer took a typical 14 point on the fourth day. Both of the
deer were huge, 300 pounds. Don Sauve is a great host and hunter. Check
out his web site at lakeofthewoodsoutfitters.com or nwoutfitters.ca. Don
will be at our fundraiser this year so go over to see him and book a
hunting or fishing trip. In addition to whitetails, Don offers black
bear and wolf.
