What to Expect When You Hunt With Us
|
Our trips start on Saturday mornings when we pick you up at the Marina in Kenora and end the following Friday morning when we bring you back. We have a big boat for passengers and a big auxiliary boat to handle all your gear. By boat it is 23 miles to our island location, right in the heart of deer country.
We have three guest cottages with our biggest being our main lodge. They are very comfortable cottages, clean and have good beds so you can have a great sleep. The cottages are fully outfitted for your convenience. Listen to the eagles, timber wolves, loons and watch the northern lights right from the deck. You will soon tell this camp was built here for the adjacent wildlife and fishery.

This is a proven trophy whitetail adventure in an awesome area and has produced lots of trophy bucks for our clients the last twelve consecutive years. Experience at hunting fair chase animals is what we are all about. We employ every legal means we can to help our guest take a trophy deer.
Ultimately it is our guests wit or sometimes luck against the Wiley whitetail buck, a formidable creature especially a trophy. You can make it big here or you can blow it here all kinds of ways. This area has produced some of the largest deer taken in the country but they are not stupid.
If you have set your expectations high on a big buck and you were looking for easy, guaranteed or a high fence hunt this is not the place to go. This is the place for real hunters looking for a proven place to hunt trophy whitetailed deer.
If you fall into that category of hunter or even if you are a novice willing to learn the techniques that work then you need to talk to Don right away.
Everybody shoots at our target range of 70 yards and has to hit paper free hand shooting before we take you hunting. Come prepared. We will help you if needed but practicing beforehand is critical to your success.
Your daily hunt is decided by the wind and weather conditions. The guides ferry you around to the best spots for the day and your experience level . Past experience has shown us that a higher percentage of big bucks are taken by the still hunters and movement should be kept to a minimum in prime areas and times. Often especially early in the season, we take the guys out to drive the islands or for short search and seek methods of hunting during the times the deer are not moving. Here is where past experiences and having someone that knows the lay of the surrounding area can pay big dividends. Our guides help as much as possible "without hurting your chances." Transportation everywhere is first by boat then by foot.
Depending on when you reserve your hunt you may have bear, timber wolf, migratory birds, grouse and fishing seasons open too. These you can do with the appropriate licenses. Usually what happens for bear and wolf is you see them while hunting deer. Grouse can be hunted on the many islands in the area away from our prime whitetail areas and ducks and geese in the adjacent marshes. Fishing is excellent throughout our area and a couple hours spent fishing usually results in a fresh fishmeal. Remember though, these other species are available at no additional charge if you are licensed and ready.
Don has been guiding hunters in this area for over 30 years. He is there on every trip and tries his best at giving his guests the best hunting he can. Let his experience go to work for you.
The Last Ten Years:
The 1996 camp record weighed in over 300 lbs. and had 14 points. The 1997 record had 19 points and weighed in at 265 lbs. The 1998 big deer was a beauty at 170 B&C. Certainly Al Kirby's double buck had to be on the top of the list for the '99 season. Dell Kirby's double buck, Dan Johnson's 16 pt buck and Dan Schmidt's big 10 pt buck were tops in 2000. Fall 2001 saw Dan Schmidt, Fred Walton and Dan Schlaff all end up with trophy bucks for the second straight season.
Terry Broemer's second big buck in as many years, Dr. John Herbert's 10 point and Don's two 10 pointers were the highlights of 2002 season. Rob Oda's big 10 point, Joan's 10 point and Don's 13 point were the biggest bucks taken in 2003. Al's massive eight point, Malcolm's 13-point and Don's big 10 point were tops for 2004. Jim Heazlett's double 9 and 10 point bucks, Joe Riccobono's big 10 pointer, 16 year old Jeremy Lee's beautiful 8 point buck were the biggest guest taken trophy's in 2005. Don also ended on a positive note with a 10 point non-typical buck with a nice drop tine taken after everyone finished hunting. Big bucks were taken, and a lot of bucks alluded people every week we hunted. Be sure to view some of them in our photo gallery.
It is our intent for all our guests to have a great trip, a warm and comfortable stay and a great Canadian adventure. "Come as guests and leave as friends."
